School Programs
School programs at Tudor Place inspire students in grades Pre-K – 8 to explore the history of Washington, D.C. and the United States from the early 19th century through the late 20th century. All programs include an interactive tour of the historic mansion or gardens and hands-on workshop.

Our programs meet local and national standards of learning in social studies, visual arts, and English/Language Arts.

PROGRAM INFORMATION
School Programs are offered year round Monday – Friday, 9:30 – 11:00 am or 12:30 – 2 pm. Story Time in the Garden is offered September – November and March – June. There is a minimum of five (5) and a maximum of twenty-five (25) students per program.

    Story Time in the Garden
    Pre-Kindergarten – Grade 2
    Program length 1 ½ hours
    Students in grades Pre-K through 1st grade are invited to explore Tudor Place’s magnificent 5 ½ acre garden. This is an exploratory program that promotes sensory learning and development. Students will observe and identify a variety of plants, flowers, and wildlife. An interactive read aloud and watercolor painting lesson follows the exploration.

    Historical Detectives
    Grades 3 – 8
    Program length: 1 ½ - 2 hours
    Students become History Detectives during an interactive tour of the historic mansion. Students gain a better understanding of how life changed in Washington D.C. from 1800 to modern day by examining artifacts and documents. After the tour, students create their own museum exhibit using reproduction artifacts and primary sources.

    Explore 1862!
    Grades 3 – 8
    Program length: 1 ½ - 2 hours
    Students travel back 150 years to the Civil War during a tour of the National Historic Landmark to learn about life in the nation’s capital during this important period in American history. After the tour, students experience life in Washington D.C. during the Civil War by dressing in period clothing and creating articles and sketches for a Civil War Era Newspaper.

    Transportation

    Free bus transportation is available to all DC public and charter school through the generous support of the George Preston Marshall Foundation.

    Preparing for Your Visit

    All teachers will receive a curriculum guide that includes suggested in-class activities to be completed before and after your visit.

    Teachers are encouraged to contact the Education Coordinator to discuss how a visit to Tutor Place can complement your curriculum. Programs may be tailored to suit individual class needs.

    Tudor Place strives to provide education programs that are accessible to all students.

    A $25 deposit at the time of registration is required. The balance will be due on the day of the program.

    If you need to CANCEL or RE-SCHEDULE a program, you must notify the Education Coordinator at least 1 WEEK before your scheduled program. Your deposit, minus a $10 non-refundable administrative fee, will be refunded or your program will be re-scheduled.

    Failure to provide timely notification (1 WEEK)of cancellation will result in forfeiture of the deposit.
