Georgetown Summer History Weeks

Dumbarton House & Tudor Place invite children ages 3-12 to “Party Into the Past” this summer at Georgetown History Weeks! Join us for five days of fun with historic clothing, food, games, music, gardening, arts and crafts! Each History Week culminates in an early American “parlor party” that children will host for their parents and other special guests!

Schedule:

Sensational Stories and Spectacular Shapes at Tudor Place
Ages 3-5, June 16 – June 20, 9 am – 12 noon, $150
Sensational Stories and Spectacular Shapes introduces children to the amazing architecture and history of Tudor Place. Children will learn through hands on activities, manners, games, dancing, crafts, and cooking. Through interactive activities children will gain a better understanding of this “sensational” place that “shaped” our past. The week will end with a Tea Party hosted by the campers for their families.

Tudor Tales at Tudor Place
Ages 6-8, June 23 – June 27, 9 am – 12 noon, $150
Tudor Tales brings to life 175 years of American history and teaches children about the natural environment. Children will help cook and sample historic snacks and drinks, try on period clothing, explore a historic garden, plant their own garden, play with historic games, construct their own buildings and landscapes, go on an archaeological expedition, and much more!

Dumbarton House Heroes & Heroines at Dumbarton House
Ages 9-12, June 23 – June 27, 9 am – 3 pm, $300
Participants will discover American heroes and heroines in the early 19th century at one of the gems of Georgetown. Children will learn the importance of the house during the War of 1812 with American’s foremost heroine: Dolley Madison! Prepare historic foods and libations, learn deportment and dancing, play games, fashion a turban and card tower, and practice “a stitch in time” plus other interactive activities.

Federal Food, Fashion, and Fun at Dumbarton House
Ages 6-8, July 28 – August 1, 9 am – 12 noon, $150
During Federal Food, Fashion, and Fun, children will experience life in Georgetown households 200 years ago, when our nation’s capital was founded. Participants will prepare historic snacks, perform early American and African American dances, make music, paint with watercolors, try on period clothing, practice Federal manners, play with historic games and toys, and more!

Tudor’s Famous Family at Tudor Place
Ages 9-12, July 28 – August 1, 9 am – 3 pm, $300
During Tudor’s First Family children explore the lives of six generations of the Peter Family. Through living history and interactive activities, children will have a better understanding of life in Georgetown over the past 200 years. Participants will learn about archeology, architecture, deportment and dancing, gaming of the period, painting and drawing, the art of needlework, and foodways though daily cooking activities.
